SS400 is a JIS G3101 general structural rolled steel, one of the most widely produced and available steel grades in Asia. The designation "SS400" refers to the guaranteed minimum tensile strength of 400 MPa, with no specific alloy additions — it is a plain carbon-silicon-manganese steel produced to tight yield and tensile strength requirements.

Material Properties
SS400 has a carbon content typically below 0.23% (not specified in JIS G3101 for general production), making it readily weldable by all common processes including MIG, TIG, SMAW, and SAW without preheating for normal sections. Formability is excellent — the material can be cold-bent, punched, and sheared with standard tooling. It does not respond meaningfully to conventional hardening heat treatment and is not intended for wear-resistant or high-strength applications. Minimum yield strength is 245 MPa (for t ≤ 16 mm).
Its primary strengths are practical and commercial: excellent weldability (no preheating required for sections up to 25 mm), easy formability, broad availability across Asia in all common thicknesses, and low cost relative to alloy or tool steel grades. For structural and fabrication applications, SS400 is the default material of choice.
